TFD Opinions: Mitt Romney is Not a Responsible Adult

Mitt Romney has spent most of time lately hiding in the shadows, avoiding taking a position on anything. Why? That's leadership? Finally, today he decided to come out and oppose the debt ceiling deal, claiming that his deal would've contained the Cut, Cap, and Balance plan and had fewer defense cuts and no chance of raising taxes. Really? And what imaginary Congress was going to vote for that bill? The Republican candidates have been spent the last few weeks hitting Obama for a lack of leadership but they think they're leaders because they would've compromised nothing and led the country into a shutdown and/or default. The deal as it stands is very good for Republicans but rather than declaring victory, the presidential candidates continue to live in a fantasy world. Romney hasn't pandered this year nearly as much as he did in 2007/2008 but it's become clear that he really hasn't changed at all.

Unlike Romney, Jon Huntsman at least expressed lukewarm support for the deal and acknowledged that even though it's not what he would've wanted, he implied that he would back it. That's why Jon Huntsman, while clearly imperfect, is much better than the rest of these know-nothings and children in the race. Of course, his adult behavior isn't going to help him in the primary but at least if he ever managed to escape a primary in the future, he wouldn't have idiotic statements like Romney's hanging over his head. If you don't have anything smart to say, don't say it at all. Romney should go back to flying under the radar and hope he can win the nomination without making asinine statements.
