2010 NFL Mock Draft - Version 2.0
The halfway mark is upon us. So that means time for an updated mock draft. I will do updated versions every week as the draft order is modified, but probably without commentary. Lots of commentary here though, and 2 rounds to boot! So enjoy!
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida. For anyone who knows me, they know I love to brag when I make a correct prediction. In my preseason mock I had the Bucs picking first, and taking Dunlap. Big Carlos hasn't had as dominating a season as I thought he would, but the amazing size and skill set is still there. And with the Bucs trading Gaines Adams they have an even bigger hole at the spot, just waiting for them. If the draft was held today, they would take Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska, who is the best player in college football right now. But no way am I going to change my pick!
2. St. Louis Rams - QB Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame. This will be the third year in a row the pathetic Rams have picked second overall. They have used their last two picks to upgrade the trenches on both sides of the ball, with mediocre results. They simply cannot allow Marc Bulger to keep strolling out there and stealing money from the franchise. With this draft so deep on QB's, it's time for the Rams to go after one. I like Clausen more then Jake Locker because he has better size and is more experience in a pro-style offense.
3. Cleveland Browns - QB Jake Locker, Washington. If it was up to Eric Mangini, I like to think the Browns would have taken Mark Sanchez last year. Instead they traded the pick for a handful of backups and average picks. There's a reason the Browns have been so bad this past decade. Mangini has already given up on Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson is possibly the worst starting QB in the NFL, so this is a no-brainer.
4. Kansas City Chiefs - S Eric Berry, Tennessee. The Chiefs have far greater needs. Mainly a #2 WR, a young linebacker, additional help for the defensive line, offensive line help, a pass rushing 3-4 outside linebacker, the list goes on and on. But I always think a team this bad, if they don't need a QB, should draft best player available. Since Suh doesn't fit with the 3-4, that guy would be Eric Berry. He's been compared to Ed Reed, and a guy like that can win you football games, even if he "only" plays safety.
5. Tennessee Titans - DT Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska. The Titans have not been the same since Albert Haynesworth skipped town. Suh has been an extremely productive and highlight making defensive tackle this year for the Cornhuskers. He's not as big and strong as Haynesworth, but could lead all DT's in sacks. He's a great player.
6. Detroit Lions - DT Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma. Read what I said about the Chiefs. The Lions did good, after drafting a QB, to draft best player available last year. They ended up with what looks like two long time starters in Brandon Pettigrew and Louis Delmas. The team still has just as many holes on the roster, meaning they can go that route again. Luckily for them, BPA this time around is a potentially dominating defensive tackle. The Lions haven't had anything resembling that since Shaun Rogers.
7. Oakland Raiders - S Taylor Mays, USC. Drafting Darrius Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree showed all of us that the Raiders might as well not have a war room, scouts or anything else. Just let Al Davis draw names (or 40 times) out of a hat. Not surprisingly, he has 5 catches and 74 yards through 8 games. Michael Crabtree has twice as many production through two games. Another blunder by the Raiders, who are as clueless as ever. So it makes sense that they'll ignore everything and use another top ten pick on a talented physicial specimen at safety. Raider fans will hope he's better then Michael Huff.
8. Seattle Seahawks - OT Russell Okung, Oklahoma St. The Seahawks could use a QB. There is Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow staring them in the faces. But since in a mock draft there is no trading, I see that they have a later first round pick and are in prime position to add a signal caller there. So they can pass on the two talented but full of question mark quarterbacks here. They have holes all over their roster. Walter Jones is nearing the end and they have no one at right tackle. Okung has struggled this year but I think he's still the top offensive lineman available.
9. Washington Redskins - QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma. The Redskins are another team in desperate need of a QB. Everyone and their mother has Tim Tebow linked to the Skins. If someone like Jon Gruden takes over the coaching job, I see that as a huge possibility. But with Bradford here they should go with him. Injury concerns were his biggest worry and it looks like those worries were valid. If he can show he's healthy he should climb back into the top ten. The NFL training staffs will keep him much healthier then the college guys can.
10. Buffalo Bills - WR Dez Bryant, Oklahoma St. The Bills have long been a team that has allowed guys to leave, or traded them, then used a first round pick on their replacement. I see the trend continuing here. I can't see Terrell Owens lasting another year in this wasteland of losing and insignifigance. So they will draft his replacement. Dez Bryant is easily the best WR in this draft, even if he has run into some troubles. I don't think it will be enough to drop him out of the top half of the first round.
11. Jacksonville Jaguars - DE Everson Griffin, USC. The common perception is the Jaguars will take Tim Tebow here. After all, David Garrard has been average and the Jaguars have talked about Tebow in the past. The fact is Garrard has 4 more years left on a big deal and the Jags only have 5 sacks this year, easily the worst in the NFL. They have used high picks on defensive ends with no results. The Jags must do whatever they can to generate a pass rush.
12. San Francisco 49ers - NT Terrence Cody, Alabama. Cody is the perfect 3-4 nose tackle. he's huge, at 365 pounds and has had an amazing season for the Crimson Tide. Elite huge nose tackles don't come along often. If you can get your Casey Hampton, your Vince Wilfork, you use a first round pick on him. Especially with 6 other 3-4 teams picking immediately behind you.
13. Miami Dolphins - MLB Rolando McClain, Alabama. The Dolphins have a good defense, but have some old guys they need to replace soon. I think they go with the best player who fits into the 3-4 here. And that is McClain. A big linebacker (6'4, 260) who could be a great fit next to Channing Crowder in the 3-4.
14. San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina Panthers) - OT Brian Baluga, Iowa. With another first round pick, the Niners can focus on their offensive trenches this time. They want to be a big time running team. Marvel Smith turned out to be a bad signing, so there is a spot open on the offensive line opposite Joe Staley.
15. New York Jets - DE/DT Arthur Jones, Syracuse. The Jets have a lot of talent on defense and are playing well for Rex Ryan, but they still lack the pieces for the 3-4, especially along the line. Jones is a tall, strong defensive tackle who is fast enough to be successful at end.
16. Arizona Cardinals - DE/OLB Ricky Sapp, Clemson. Another team who has recently transitioned to a different defensive scheme, and another team that needs to add pieces to fit that scheme. Sapp is tall and lean and has the skills to get to the quarterback. Looks like a great outside linebacker for the 3-4 defense.
17. San Diego Chargers - RB Jonathan Dwyer, Georgia Tech. LaDanian Tomlinson does not have a whole lot left. Darren Sproles has been up and down this season, and is not worth the money the Chargers are paying him this season. They will have their choice of what running back they want to take to replace the best RB in franchise history. Dwyer has the size and enough speed to be at the top of the list.
18. Green Bay Packers - RB Jahvid Best, California. Ryan Grant has been up and down, mostly down, for the Packers. What Grant most lacks is explosiveness. Best, however, does not. If he can be limited to 10-15 carries per game, he could be an amazing big play threat for the Pack, a team that really has never had that kind of talent in the back field.
19. Denver Broncos (from Chicago Bears) - CB Joe Haden, Florida. The Broncos defense has played out of their mind so far this season. But they are still in need of a great deal of talent. I think Haden is the best defensive player available. He can learn behind one of the best to ever do it, Champ Bailey, then replace Andre' Goodman sooner rather then later.
20. Atlanta Falcons - DE Greg Hardy, Ole' Miss. Jamaal Anderson has been a huge dissapointment and might be better off inside. The Falcons could use a pass rusher to play opposite John Abraham.
21. Baltimore Ravens - CB Kareem Jackson, Alabama. The Ravens are much better then their 4-3 record indicates. But their defense has given up a ton of huge plays. Most of that blame lies on the secondary, where they have two starting cornerbacks who are more suited to be nickle backs. They look to add to that talent base here.
22. Houston Texans - DT Marvin Austin, North Carolina. The Houston Texans have been using first round picks on defensive players for the last few years. It's a good strategy for them and they should go back to that this year. So they go with Austin, who has really started living up to the hype this year.
23. New York Giants - MLB Brandon Spikes, Florida. The Giants have a very average linebacking group. Spikes is good enough to play outside if the Giants decide not to part ways with Antonio Pierce.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers - OT Anthony Davis, Rutgers. The Steelers offensive line has played pretty well this season. I still think it is by far their weakest position on the football field. Davis is good enough to play right or left tackle and could step in for either.
25. Cincinnati Bengals - TE Jermaine Gresham, Oklahoma. The Bengals and Marvin Lewis know where the money makers are. On offense. With Cedric Benson having an unbelievable year and Andre Caldwell looking like the successor to Laveranues Coles, the Bengals can afford a luxury pick. No one gets less out of their tight ends then Cincinnati, so they draft Gresham. Gresham is a super talented, huge elite tight end who has slipped due to a subpar season. I think he'll really turn it around.
26. Dallas Cowboys - DE/OLB Jerry Hughes, TCU. The Cowboys have used a plethora of first round picks on linebackers. DeMarcus Ware was obviously a hit. Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Spencer? Not so much. So try try again. Hughes is from nearby Texas Christian and is terrorizing opposing quarterbacks once again this year.
27. New England Patriots - QB Tim Tebow, Florida. Whaaa? If any team can afford a luxury pick of this magnitude, it is the Patriots. Bill Belichick loves weapons on offense and will find a way to get Tebow into the game. Whether it's at QB, HB, TE or WR. I'm a Dolphins fan but I would love to see what Tebow could do part time in this offense.
28. Philadelphia Eagles - DE Derrick Morgan, Georgia Tech. The Eagles added much needed talent to the offensive side of the ball, so Andy Reid can now go back to replenishing the defense. The Eagles are pretty deep everywhere, so they can just take best player available. And you can never have too many pass rushers.
29. Seattle Seahawks (from Denver Broncos) - QB Ryan Mallett, Arkansas. Like I mentioned before, the Seahawks should have their pick of a QB here. Both Mallett and Colt McCoy are sitting here for them. They take Mallett. He's a huge QB, and if you look at the AFC north, sometimes it's good to have a big, strong QB to lean upon. Either way, the Matt Hasselbeck era must come to an end now.
30. Minnesota Vikings - QB Colt McCoy, Texas. The way Brett Favre is playing, I think he plays another one or two years. Which would be perfect for McCoy, who can learn under one of the greats then maybe come in and take over. Either way, the Vikings need to get a young QB in here, because the Tarvaris Jackson experiment is over.
31. New Orleans Saints - OLB Greg Jones, Michigan St. The Saints defense has been great under Gregg Williams, who was expected to improve the defense. The talent, however, is still lacking. Jones is a smallish linebacker that could be a good fit for this scheme.
32. Indianapolis Colts - C Maurkice Pouncey, Florida. Pouncey is an elite interior lineman who can play three positions. He'll be an immediate backup and could step in for Jeff Saturday in a year or two.
Round 2
33. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - WR Arrelious Benn, Illinois
34. St. Louis Rams - OT Bruce Campbell, Maryland
35. Cleveland Browns - RB CJ Spiller, Clemson
36. Kansas City Chiefs - OLB Sergio Kindle, Texas
37. New England Patriots (from Tennessee Titans) - DE/OLB Jason Worilds, Virginia Tech
38. Detroit Lions - OT Charles Brown, USC
39. Oakland Raiders - OT Trent Williams, Oklahoma
40. Seattle Seahawks - CB Patrick Robinson, Florida St.
41. Washington Redskins - DE Brandon Graham, Michigan
42. Buffalo Bills - OLB Bruce Carter, North Carolina
43. New England Patriots (from Jacksonville Jaguars) - RB Joe McKnight, USC
44. San Francisco 49ers - S Earl Thomas, Texas
45. Miami Dolphins - DT Phil Taylor, Baylor
46. Carolina Panthers - QB Jevan Snead, Ole' Miss
47. New York Jets - WR Damian Williams, USC
48. Arizona Cardinals - OT Selvish Capers, West Virginia
49. San Diego Chargers - WR Brandon LaFell, LSU
50. Green Bay Packers - OT Ciron Black, LSU
51. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from Chicago Bears) - DT Vince Oghobaase, Duke
52. Kansas City Chiefs (from Atlanta Falcons) - OT Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin
53. Baltimore Ravens - WR Mike Williams, Syracuse
54. Houston Texans - S Rashad Jones, Georgia
55. New York Giants - DT DeMarcus Granger, Oklahoma
56. Pittsburgh Steelers - RB Noel Devine, West Virginia
57. Cincinnati Bengals - CB Syd'Quan Thompson, California
58. Dallas Cowboys - DE Cameron Heyward, Ohio St.
59. New England Patriots - DE/OLB George Selvie, South Florida
60. Philadelphia Eagles - MLB Reggie Carter, UCLA
61. Denver Broncos - QB Tony Pike, Cincinnati
62. Minnesota Vikings - DT Dan Williams, Tennessee
63. New Orleans Saints - DE Greg Middleton, Indiana
64. Indianapolis Colts - TE Dennis Pitta, BYU
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida. For anyone who knows me, they know I love to brag when I make a correct prediction.
